It helps to be in an environment where you can watch over someone's shoulder and learn how to do some of those things - and I know that's sometimes hard to find anymore. Personally, I'm online every day, following all the major Macintosh troubleshooting and news sites, participating in various troubleshooting forums, in addition to working with the hardware and software in my daily job duties and troubleshooting for others. Just being able to absorb the information doesn't do you much good if you can't "practice" using what you've learned somewhere. So look for somewhere you can get that hands-on practice.
